“Let food be thy medicine and medicine by thy food” - Hippocrates
Nutrigenomics is the science that studies the interaction between your nutrition and genes, especially with regard to the prevention or treatment of disease. It is the in-depth interactions between the nutrients that signal our DNA to change our cell signaling; it is the study of how what we eat affects our microbiome and the signals that influences the choices in our daily lives.
Remember that everything we ingest eventually becomes our bodies. We are rebuilt, day in and out, from the foods that we place into our bodies. They do more than give us fuel, they becomes us. The old adage of “you are what you eat” is true. Everything you are made of, you once consumed.
So why is nutrition so difficult to understand? “Diets” are inherently tied to health and wellness. Why? Because education is lacking and marketing is in excess. If we can find “one thing” that is the next superfood, then we can sell this idea or idealism to those without a knowledge of nutrition. We are currently inundated in a society where diet and lifestyle marketing conflicts and debates what is the best diet. Is it Paleo, Keto, Gluten Free, Vegan, Mediterranean, FODMAP, blood type, Intermittent fasting? Are carbs good or bad? Is fat dangerous? Ask one “expert” and they will give you a slightly different answer than the next. To find the truth, we must realize that there is NO one right answer to the question. There is no single diet that is best for everyone. Why? Because everyone’s genetics are different. What makes it even more complex? We can change and influence our genes over time! The “best” for you at age 20, may be vastly different from what is “best” for you at age 35 or 50.
In general “diets” are targeted to people with a “goal” in mind. For most, this is weight loss. The problem is that we are looking for the goal, but not the underlying cause of the issue in the first place. Why do you need to lose weight? Are hormones in balance? Is there underlying stress that is not being addressed? Is there a missing piece of education about nutrition and what our body needs to thrive?
In our practice, we focus on overall on education about what a healthy lifestyle looks like. We may recommend some dietary strategies to optimize your health with the effect that your weight will normalize. We focus on nutrients which come from fresh fruits and vegetables with occasional fresh organic meats and fish. We will teach you how to improve your bodies functions by getting the vitamins and minerals you need while minimizing or maximizing foods that will influence changes in the genome and hormones of your body to help you get the results you want.
